As your Mayor, I am committed to Unley being a living and ecologically sustainable city, that protects our heritage, and responds to challenges with innovation.
As a community, we have now reached a level of maturity and appreciation for the environment, whereby it's time to build on our many initiatives and make our Unley "village" green. In the coming term I will work with you, within a strategy and affordable budget to:
- Implement the new three bin recycle system
- Expand bike routes such as the new Keswick shared bike path
- Implement our innovative Desirable Neighbourhoods & Village Plan
- Generate involvement of youth in the plan to green our City via their schools
- Stimulate "green business" through the Street Life Trust
- Expand our Bio-diversity strategy
- Extend the network of linear parks, such as the Windsor Street walk
- Create more initiatives such as the Clarence Park Community Centre native gardens and water recycle plan
- Address the community's social & physical needs better, by having our recreation facilities, such as the pool, responding to our "work all hours" society
- Ensure safety, lifestyle & reduced pollution by the implementation and extension of programs such as the 40-kph zones, the school-safe "Kiss and Run" traffic lanes and the "Go Slow for Us" campaign.
- Initiate a cable-bundling management strategy for power lines, to ensure Unley's trees do not pay for any power failures & suffer ETSA's axe
- Recognise the contribution our street & park trees make to South Australia in reducing green house & carbon dioxide emissions - they are a tax credit in the Kyoto accord
- Ensure we get our share of the flood mitigation funding spent on ecologically sustainable solutions that are right for Unley.
- Expand local community transport services
- Extend the Goodwood Traders' pilot in sustainable business management to cover all of Unley
- Maintain Unley's commitment to buy green electrical power
- Establish an environment watch for Unley utilising existing local networks
